• Each element has an oxidation number/ an oxidation state.
  • An oxidation number is the charge of an element if it was composed of ions. Which shows how many electrons it has to gain or lose to achieve a full outer shell.

  • So as you can see by the legend in the picture, the oxidation numbers are the little black number above the element letters.
  • For example: Sodium/ Na has an oxidation state of plus one, so it wants to gain one electronto obtain a full outer shell.
