Each element has an oxidation number/ an oxidation state.
An oxidation number is the charge of an element if it was composed of ions. Which shows how many electrons it has to gain or lose to achieve a full outer shell.
My apologies on the huge picture, but it had to be magnified to see the oxidation states.
So as you can see by the legend in the picture, the oxidation numbers are the little black number above the element letters.
For example: Sodium/ Na has an oxidation state of plus one, so it wants to gain one electronto obtain a full outer shell.
